What to Expect

Health and Safety Measures

Since 2020 we have procedures in place to protect our patients and ourselves.

Screening:
We are currently sending out screening questions the evening before your appointment.

Hand Sanitiser:

You will be asked to use hand sanitiser when you arrive at the clinic before you enter.

Masks:

We currently request that all patients to wear a type IIR surgical mask or better, if you don't have any of these we will give you a surgical mask when you arrive. (If you are unable to wear a mask please contact us before the appointment to discuss this)

Minimal Waiting Area:

To reduce patient contact we request that you please arrive on time rather than early for appointments.

We are taking all these precautions to optimise safe practice and ensure that more vulnerable individual can still access care.

Please let us know if you have any questions and please stay safe,

What We Do

What to Expect from your  Appointment

Osteopathy is tailored to the individual, but in general an osteopathic consultation will follow the same basic pattern;

01

We will take a comprehensive medical history, including all current symptoms, medications, leisure activities and general health questions.

If we ask any questions that you do not wish to answer then it is essential that you let us know that you do not want to answer them (rather than omitting a potentially important piece of information).

02

We will ask you to undress or change into loose/stretchy clothing and perform some simple movements.
The most important thing is that you are comfortable in what you are wearing.

This will allow us to assess how different areas of your body are moving, interacting and functioning with each other.

We will perform other examinations suggested by the case history and then  explain our findings.

03

We will discuss with you our findings and appropriate treatment options. Together we will come up to an approach to treatment that you are happy with. We will  request your consent before starting any treatment.

We treat with our hands, using manual techniques to relax muscles and articulate joints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is in charge during my consultation?

YOU

As osteopaths and sports massage therapists, we will offer you our advice and suggest courses of action, however you are (and always will be) in charge of what happens to you. If, at any point, you have concerns or are unhappy with what has been discussed then please bring it to our attention and we will help to resolve (or work around) the issue.

What should I wear?

As with any medical examination, you may be asked to undress to your underwear. The most important thing is that you are comfortable in what you are wearing.

However, please wear loose or stretchy clothing so that we can work around/through it (tough materials can very much get in the way)

Does it hurt?

Some soft tissue treatment may cause discomfort during treatment.  Your osteopath or sports massage therapist will tell you what to expect and will want you to let them know if you are in pain.  You may feel a little stiff or sore after treatment, this is a normal healthy response to the treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments you need depends on the condition and the individual we are treating. We will, of course, aim to resolve your complaint in as few treatments as possible, although this can be difficult to predict as everyone is different.

For an acute (recent) injury; 2-6 consultations over a couple of months would be normal. Chronic (long term) problems may take longer or require periodic appointments. All of this will be discussed with you during your consultation.

Where are you?

What do you treat?

At The SW7 Clinic, we do not treat 'conditions', we treat individuals. The most common presenting complaints we see are:

• back and neck pain
• shoulder and arm problems
• pelvis, hip and leg problems
• sports and other injuries

• pregnancy related pain

However, patients have found osteopathy helpful for many other complaints. If you want to find out more, send us a message, we're always happy to help.

Can I bring a friend or relative?

Of course - if you are unsure (or would just like some extra support) then here at The SW7 Clinic we would encourage you to bring someone you trust. Remember; YOU are in charge of the consultation.

Do I need to see my doctor first?

You do not need to see your doctor first if you are paying for your own treatment. However some insurance companies require you to see your doctor first.  Osteopathy is available on the NHS in some areas - national guidelines say it should be available everywhere for low back pain.

Do I need to wear a mask?

We currently request that all patients wear a type IIR surgical mask or better, if you don't have one, we will give you a surgical mask when you arrive.

We are still using masks so that our more vulnerable patient can access treatment safely.

If you are unable to wear a mask please contact us before the appointment to discuss this.
